Health authorities in several African countries are waging a battle against so-called “energy drinks” that contain unadvertised levels of tadalafil — the active ingredient in the popular erectile dysfunction medication Cialis — to lengths that critics have stumped the field fromcreation. The latest effort to quash the marketing of the tadalafil-enanthating energy drink comes as Cialis maker Eli Lilly and Company is expected to unveil a new new energy drink that could be the answer to the nation’s growing health problem.
Now, after months of debate, a coalition of health, arijuana and sports organizations has proposed legislation that would ban the tadalafil energy drink. The proposal, known as the Power of Light bill, was filed into the U. S. Senate, where it was approved by a vote of 42. A vote was not immediately available but could be interpreted as a recommendation to support the legislation.
“The power of light,” as it is commonly known, would be “a powerful and protective mechanism to protect the environment, to reduce the risk of human- Frankfurt, and to keep people safe.”
In his proposed bill, Democratic Rep. Adam F. Schiff, R-FL, proposes banning the energy drink for a specific purpose. The measure is one of more than 250 bills in the last 15 years that has passed both houses of Congress and is expected to be heard in the next few weeks.
The bill is the latest attempt by Lilly to launch a new way of producing energy drinks that can be “gamed” or “gamed” — the term for a “gamed” version of a substance.
At a recent conference, the industry’s largest sponsor, Pfizer, expressed surprise at the reaction to the energy drink. “The energy drink is a dangerous, dangerous device and has a serious and life-threatening potential for consumers,” Pfizer chairman and CEO Charles Showers called the proposed law “not the latest attempt at legislation but a dangerous step towards a dangerous industry.”
Other major industry participants — maker Reckitt Benckiser, maker of tadalafil — also have proposed legislation that could face significant legal action. The measure, which would require the manufacturer to prove that the energy drink is “gamed,” would require the regulatory agency to make a decision on whether to approve the energy drink. It would also require the manufacturer to submit a label to the FDA to approve the energy drink.
But Schiff is certain that he will not oppose the bill. “If a consumer wants to consume a beverage that contains a dangerous product,” Schiff told The Associated Press, “the consumer has the right to know the potential consequences.”
In his proposal, Schiff says the energy drink will be sold “on the black market.” He also points out that tadalafil is a prescription drug and is not approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction. “The FDA cannot approve energy drinks for prescription use because there is no FDA-approved drug to treat the condition,” he says.
Wendy A. Jeltsch, a spokesman for Eli Lilly, says the company is working with regulators to develop a new energy drink.
“This proposed bill,” Jeltsch told The Associated Press, “could have a direct impact on the energy drinks industry, with potentially large numbers of consumers turning to these drinks for relief and other benefits.”
“The energy drinks industry has a lot of resources to develop new and innovative energy drinks that do not contain tadalafil and which are not approved by the FDA for the use of energy drinks,” Jeltsch told The Associated Press.
However, he says, he is “not opposed to this legislation.”
